COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Baker baseball team began the 2020 season on Thursday, falling to Vanguard University, 8-6.
Jacob Sula and Kyle Klomfahs both led the team with two hits on the afternoon, while Klomfahs drove in five of the team’s six runs. Klomfahs went 2-for-5 on the day, collecting his first home run of the season.
Ryker Johnson got the call to start the game on Thursday, throwing five innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Peyton Kahle was able to throw 2.2 innings in the game, giving up three runs on three hits before Brandon Gomer threw 0.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits.
Both teams went scoreless for the first two innings, but then with the bases loaded in the top of the third inning, Baker struck first as Klomfahs crushed a ball over the wall to clear the bases and give Baker a 4-0 lead.
Vanguard was then able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on a double to cut the Baker lead to 4-2. The Lions then added one more run in the bottom of the fifth and one in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at four with just two innings to play.
Vanguard then broke it open in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring four runs to take an 8-4 lead heading into the ninth inning. The Wildcats were able to scratch across two runs in the ninth, but could not complete the comeback as they lost, 8-6.
Baker starts the season with a record of 0-1 and will be in action again on Friday, Feb. 7, as they take on San Diego Christian at 11 a.m. (CT) before taking on College of Idaho at 5 p.m. (CT), in San Diego, Calif.
