[Softball] Akin Named Heart of America Pitcher of the Week

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – After posting a 4-0 record on the week and helping the team to a perfect 6-0 record, Makayla Akin has been named the Heart of America Pitcher of the Week.

On the week, Akin pitched a total of 16.2 innings, collecting three wins and posting an ERA of 0.84. Akin started the week off, allowing just two hits and throwing a complete game shutout to begin the season, as Baker won 8-0 in five innings.

Akin then got the start in game one on Friday against Midland, striking out eight batters on her way to her second consecutive complete game shutout with Baker winning, 5-9.

Akin then came entered game two on Friday in relief, pitching the final 2.2 innings of the game to receive her third win of the week, allowing just one earned run. To finish off the strong week, Akin pitched two innings in game one on Saturday against St. Mary, allowing just one earned run and collecting a strikeout.

Along with her ability in the circle, Akin also contributed at the plate, picking up eight hits in 19 at-bats on the week to post a batting average of .421. Of those eight hits, Akin connected on three doubles, driving in a team-high 10 RBI.

Akin and the Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Wichita, Kan., to compete in a triangular with Friends and Doane. The ‘Cats will take on Friends at 12 p.m., followed by a matchup with Doane at 2 p.m.

[Cheer/Dance] Wildcats Perform Well in Final Performance Before Midwest Regional

FAYETTE, Mo. – In their final performance before hosting the Midwest Regional Qualifier this upcoming weekend, the Baker cheer and dance teams competed at the Central Methodist Invitational on Sunday as the dance team finished in first and the cheer team finished in fourth.

Finishing first in their fifth event of the season, the Baker dance team posted a score of 76.43, beating second place Central Methodist by over six full points.

“It was great to get another competition in before regionals,” head dance coach Lynsey Payne said. “We were able to identify some things that we need to clean up for Friday and it just made the team more ready to work towards our goals. I’m so impressed with this team and the energy they bring to every performance. Every time we take the floor, we just continue to get better.”

The Baker University cheer team also competed in Fayette on Saturday, posting a score of 38.22 to finish in fourth place in the event.

“I thought the team performed really well today,” head cheer coach Savannah Clouse said. “We had to make some last minute changes but the team pulled together and executed a clean routine. We had a great time on the mat and that really showed in their performance today.”

The Baker cheer and dance teams will not be back in action this weekend as they host the Midwest Regional Qualifier on Friday and Saturday inside the Collins Center. Dance will take place on Friday, with prelims beginning at 2 p.m. The cheer portion of the competition will take place on Saturday, with prelims beginning at 10:30 a.m.
