CANTON, Mo. – Clinching a spot in the 2020 Heart of America Conference Championships, the Baker men’s basketball team defeated Culver-Stockton on Saturday, 69-44.
“We came out ready to play from the tip today, and did a nice job on the defensive end for 40 minutes,” head coach Sean Dooley said. “It wasn’t our best offensive game today, but Brandon Clifford was really good and our effort defensively allowed us to control the game from start to finish. It was a great team win with many guys contributing in some form or fashion. This gives us some momentum going into the conference tournament.”
Brandon Clifford led the scoring efforts, scoring a game-high 20 points, while sinking six three-pointers. The next highest scorer for the Wildcats was Kobe Buffalomeat who added nine points in just 13 minutes.
It didn’t take long for the Wildcats to get things going as midway through the second quarter, Baker held an eight point lead. Baker continued to add to that lead for the rest of the half as a basket by Buffalomeat gave Baker a 19-point lead with 1:29 to play before halftime. A basket by Culver-Stockton cut the lead to 17, but two free throws from Clifford gave Baker a 38-19 lead at halftime.
Just three minutes into the second half, Baker would push their lead to 26 on a three from Clifford. Culver-Stockton would cut the lead to 20 with 12:46 to play, but that is the closes they would come as Baker buckled down on both sides of the ball. Baker added to their lead for the rest of the game, eventually winning, by 25, 69-44.
The Wildcats finish the regular season with a record of 15-15 and 13-11 in Heart of America play. They will now travel to Peru, Neb., to take on Peru State in the first round of the Heart of America Conference Championships.
