[Baseball] William Penn Downs Baker In Double Header

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Baker baseball team resumed Heart of America play as they traveled to William Penn for a double header on Saturday.

In game one, Ryker Johnson took the hill for the ‘Cats. In the bottom of the first inning, Johnson would work his way out of a based loaded jam allowing just one run and struck out three batters.

As the ‘Cats were held scoreless through the first three innings, WPU would extend their early lead with back to back doubles followed by back to back singles and an error that would plate a total of five runs to give the Statesmen a 6-0 lead after three innings.

Baker would get on the board off a solo home run by Martin Radosevic to lead off the fourth inning. After giving up a two-run home run to William Penn in the bottom of the inning, the Wildcats would plate four runs in the top of the sixth off doubles from Brian Hawkins, Martin Radosevic and Cody Rowe to trail, 8-5.

WPU would then respond with four runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. The Statesmen would close out Baker in the top of the seventh to win game one, 12-5.

In game two, the Wildcats fell behind early as WPU would score seven runs in the first inning. The Statesmen would plate three more before the Wildcats would get their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Despite scoring two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, the Wildcats could not slow down the WPU offense enough to make a comeback as William Penn defeated Baker, 13-5.

The Wildcats are now 5-16 on the season and yet to earn a conference victory, 0-6. The ‘Cats resume play Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as they travel to Des Moines, IA to take on Grand View in a double header.

Wildcats Finish Season With 73-62 Loss to Peru State in the Heart of America Conference Tournament Quarterfinals

PERU, Neb. – Despite cutting the lead to eight in the second half, the Baker men’s basketball team ended their season on Thursday with a 73-62 loss to Peru State in the Heart of America Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.

Jalen Patterson led the team in scoring on the night with 18 points, while Brandon Clifford added 13 points in his final game as a Wildcat. Senior Brett Elifritz also led the team in rebounds on the night, pulling down eight boards.

Early in the first half, the Wildcats came out with a lot of energy, holding a 7-6 lead with 16 minutes to play in the first half. The Bobcats then began to knock down the three as they hit eight three-pointers in the first half.

With the Wildcats trailing 13-12 with just under 14 minutes to play, Peru State scored 16 unanswered points over the next seven minutes to take a 29-12 lead. Baker would break out of the cold streak and were able to cut the lead to 14 heading into halftime, 40-26.

In the second half, the Bobcats pushed their lead to as many as nine points, but the Baker Wildcats would not fold. Over the next 10 minutes, the Wildcats would climb their way back into the game, cutting the lead to 10 with 3:26 remaining.

With just over a minute remaining, Patterson sank two free throws to cut the lead to eight, but the Wildcats could not complete the comeback as they fell to Peru State, 73-62.

The Wildcats finish the season with an overall record of 15-16 and finish the regular season with a record of 13-11 in the Heart of America.
